From the airport or station to the city

Where you land, the ways into the city centre, how long each takes and what it costs.

From Chengde South Station (high-speed rail)

承德南站

  • BusTime40–50 minCost¥2

Bus 69 runs from the station to the Mountain Resort. High-speed trains from Beijing Chaoyang take about 50–60 minutes, so Chengde works as a long day trip from Beijing, though one night is better.

  • TaxiTime25–30 minCost¥35–45

The station is about 9–10 km south of the city centre. Taxis and DiDi wait outside; about ¥40 to the Mountain Resort’s main gate.

From Chengde Station (regular trains)

承德站

  • TaxiTime10 minCost¥10–15

The old station is in the city, about 3 km south-east of the Mountain Resort. Slower conventional trains from Beijing arrive here; a short taxi or DiDi ride takes you to the hotels and the Resort.

From Chengde Puning Airport

承德普宁机场

  • TaxiTime30–40 minCost¥50–80

A small airport about 20 km north-east of the city with domestic flights only. Most international visitors fly into Beijing and take the high-speed train.

Getting around

The Mountain Resort is in the city centre, and the open Outer Temples sit in an arc on the hills to its north and east, 1–4 km apart: combine walking with short taxi or DiDi rides (usually ¥10–20). Bus 6 goes to Puning Temple (Dafosi stop) and bus 10 to the Qingchui Peak cable car. Jinshanling Great Wall (about 100 km south-west, roughly 1.5–2 hours by car) and the Saihanba / Mulan Weichang grasslands (about 240 km north, 4 hours or more) need a hired car or a tour. Visa-free transit: the whole of Hebei, including Chengde, is inside the 240-hour visa-free transit stay area, and most visitors enter through Beijing’s airports, which are eligible ports. Real-name tickets: carry your passport to every site.
