Getting around

Dunhuang is a small, flat town: the centre, the night market and the museum are walkable, and Mingsha Mountain is a 10-minute taxi ride south. There is no metro; use taxis or DiDi. The Mogao Caves shuttle starts from the Digital Exhibition Center east of town. For Yumen Pass, the Yadan landforms and Yangguan (80–180 km west), hire a car with driver for the day or join a local day tour. Carry your passport: almost every site checks it.

Book these before you fly

These sights need a reservation with your passport. Walk-ups are usually turned away.
