Getting around
The old town sights (Dazhao, Xilitu Zhao, Five Pagoda Temple, Saishang Old Street, the Great Mosque) are within 2 km of each other and walkable. Metro Line 1 runs east–west past Xinhua Square, the Inner Mongolia Museum and Hohhot East Station to the airport; taxis and DiDi are cheap for everything else. The grasslands (Xilamuren, Gegentala, Huitengxile) are 1.5–2.5 hours away with no practical public transport: join a day tour or hire a car with driver, and go between June and early October, as camps close in winter. Hohhot (Inner Mongolia) is outside the 240-hour visa-free transit stay area, so you need a visa or another visa-free route to visit. Carry your passport for museum bookings and hotel check-in.
