China in winter: where to go December–February (2026–27)

Harbin ice, Changbaishan snow, quiet Beijing, warm Sanya and sunny Yunnan: where to go Dec–Feb, what closes, Chinese New Year 2027, heating and packing.

China in winter splits in two. Go north for ice and snow: Harbin's ice city, the snowfields of Changbaishan and an empty, frosty Beijing. Go south for milder weather: Sanya's beaches, tropical Xishuangbanna, and sunny Yunnan, where Kunming and Dali often have clear winter skies. Avoid the week around Chinese New Year, which falls on 6 February 2027, unless you want to see the festival itself.

The cold north: ice, snow and quiet sights

Harbin 哈尔滨 is the big draw. The Harbin Ice and Snow World (哈尔滨冰雪大世界) builds a city of ice by the Songhua River each winter. Dates and prices for 2026–27 had not been announced on 24 October 2026; last season it opened on 17 December 2025, an adult ticket cost ¥328, and it closed early on 21 February 2026 after record warm days. Plan for late December to mid-February and don't bet on late February. Our Harbin Ice Festival guide has the details, and the Harbin city page covers the Russian-era old town and Central Street. January nights in Harbin routinely drop below −20°C.

Changbaishan 长白山 is China's best winter mountain for snow scenery, reached from Yanji 延吉 by high-speed train to Changbaishan station (about 1–1.5 hours). The North and West slopes stay open all year, but the road to the crater lake Tianchi (天池) closes at short notice for wind, fog or snow, often for whole days in winter. Keep a spare day.

Beijing 北京 is at its quietest from November to early March, outside the New Year and Spring Festival holidays. The Forbidden City (故宫) charges ¥40 instead of ¥60 from 1 November to 31 March and closes at 16:30, with tickets still booked online and Mondays closed. The Great Wall at Mutianyu (慕田峪) runs shorter winter hours (about 08:00–17:30; check before you go). Beijing's winters are dry, so snow on the Wall is never guaranteed: if it does snow, go the next morning, and wear shoes with grip, because the steps ice over.

The warm south: beaches and the tropics

  • Sanya 三亚 on Hainan Island is China's winter beach. Its long-term average temperature in January is about 21°C; evenings can still be cool enough for a light jacket. Expect the busiest period and higher hotel prices over New Year and Spring Festival. See our Sanya guide.
  • Xishuangbanna 西双版纳 in southern Yunnan is in its dry season: warm, sunny afternoons, misty mornings, the Tropical Botanical Garden at Menglun and Dai temples in Jinghong.
  • Xiamen 厦门 and Guangzhou 广州 are mild rather than hot, often 10–20°C, grey and damp. Good for food and city walks, not for swimming.

Yunnan: sunny winter at altitude

Winter is Yunnan's dry season. Kunming 昆明, the "Spring City" at about 1,900 m, has sunny days and chilly nights, and black-headed gulls from Siberia winter on Dianchi Lake (滇池), usually from November to March. Dali 大理 at about 2,000 m has clear days for cycling around Erhai Lake (洱海), but nights near freezing, and many guesthouses have no heating.

The Yuanyang rice terraces 元阳梯田 in Honghe are flooded with water from about December to March, which turns them into mirrors at sunrise and sunset. Duoyishu (多依树) is the classic sunrise viewpoint, Bada (坝达) the sunset one. Fog decides everything, so give it two mornings.

What closes or changes in winter

  • Shorter hours. Many museums, parks and scenic areas switch to winter hours from November, often closing at 16:30–17:30 with last entry an hour earlier.
  • Mountain roads and summits. Snow and ice close summit roads (Changbaishan's Tianchi), high passes in western Sichuan and Tibet, and some cable cars for maintenance. Unrestored "wild" Great Wall sections are dangerous when icy.
  • Off-season prices. Some big sights charge less. Jiuzhaigou (九寨沟) drops from ¥190 + ¥90 bus to ¥80 + ¥80 bus from 16 November to 31 March, and it still needs a real-name booking.
  • Early dark. The sun sets around 16:00 in Harbin in midwinter and around 17:00 in Beijing. Plan outdoor sights for the morning.

Chinese New Year 2027

Chinese New Year (春节, Spring Festival) falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, with New Year's Eve on 5 February and the Lantern Festival on 20 February. The official public-holiday days for 2027 are set by a State Council notice, normally published in November (the 2026 notice came out on 4 November 2025 and gave nine days off, 15–23 February 2026). Until it appears, treat the whole first half of February 2027 as holiday-affected.

What it means for you: trains and flights sell out for about two weeks either side as hundreds of millions travel home, prices jump, and many small family restaurants and shops close for several days, while temple fairs, lantern shows and big sights fill up. Read Chinese New Year and Golden Week travel for how to plan around it.

Heating: north warm inside, south cold inside

China draws a heating line along the Qinling mountains and the Huai River (秦岭–淮河). North of it, buildings have central heating: Beijing's legal heating season is 15 November to 15 March, Harbin's usually runs from about 20 October to 20 April (it started on 10 October in 2026). Rooms are warm, even hot, and very dry.

South of it, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Guilin and Kunming, most homes and hotels are outside a universal municipal central-heating system. Heating varies by property: many hotels use reverse-cycle air conditioning, while some budget accommodation may provide little or none. Check the room's heating before booking; newer hotels are more likely to have effective systems.

What to pack

  • Far north (Harbin, Changbaishan): thermal base layers, a long down coat, a hat that covers the ears, a face buff, two pairs of gloves (thin touchscreen ones under thick ones), and insulated boots with grip. Self-heating patches (暖宝宝, nuǎnbǎobǎo) are widely sold in convenience stores and pharmacies.
  • Beijing: a down jacket, warm hat and gloves.
  • Yunnan: sunscreen and sunglasses for the altitude, plus a fleece for nights.
  • Sanya 三亚 on Hainan Island is China's winter beach. Its long-term average temperature in January is about 21°C; evenings can still be cool enough for a light jacket. Expect the busiest period and higher hotel prices over New Year and Spring Festival. See our Sanya guide.
  • Your phone: batteries die fast in deep cold. Keep it in an inside pocket and carry a power bank, because you will need it for payments and maps.
