Set it up at home

  1. 1
    Download the official app

Install TenPayGo from the App Store or Google Play. The publisher should be Tencent Technology (Shenzhen). The app is in English. Do the setup at home, before you fly.

  2. 2
    Sign up with your email

Registration needs only an email address: no phone number, Chinese or otherwise, and no WeChat account. Confirm your email if the app asks.

  3. 3
Link a card, Apple Pay or your e-wallet

Add a card from one of the seven international networks Weixin Pay supports, such as Visa or Mastercard, or use Apple Pay. Some overseas e-wallets can also be linked. Approve the card in your bank app if asked.

  4. 4
    Check your payment code works

Open the payment code once at home to make sure it appears. If the app asks for more details about you, such as your passport, complete that at home too. Keep Alipay or WeChat set up as well: TenPayGo is new and still changing.

Using it in China

Pay wherever you see Weixin Pay

Scan the shop’s Weixin Pay (green) code, or show your payment code to the cashier. TenPayGo does not pay Alipay-only codes; use Alipay there.

Metro and buses in Shenzhen

In Shenzhen you can turn on a ride code for the metro and buses inside TenPayGo, with no phone number or transport card. In other cities, use Alipay or WeChat ride codes, or buy tickets at the machines.

Know what it cannot do

TenPayGo is for paying. It has no chat, and most WeChat mini-programs, such as restaurant ordering and museum bookings, still need a WeChat account. Tencent says more features are coming, such as tax refunds and menu translation.

Problems and fixes

Sign-up says the app is in internal testing

Before the official launch, many sign-ups were held at this screen. Update to the latest version from the store and try again. If it persists, try a different email address or wait a few days, and use Alipay or WeChat meanwhile.

The verification email does not arrive

Check your spam and promotions folders and wait a few minutes before requesting a new code. Make sure you typed the address correctly. If it still does not come, try another email provider.

My card is declined

Approve the payment in your bank app or turn on online and overseas payments, then try once more. If it still fails, switch to Apple Pay or a card on another network rather than retrying again and again.

The app said the payment failed, but my card was charged

Do not pay again straight away. Check your order history in the app and your banking app first, and ask the cashier whether the payment arrived. If you were charged but the shop got nothing, contact support from inside the app with the time and amount; a failed charge is often reversed automatically.

A shop’s code will not scan

It may be an Alipay-only code, a personal code meant for friends, or a code from another payment provider. Show your own payment code instead, pay with Alipay, or pay cash. Every business must accept cash.

I do not know what fee or limit applies

Tencent has not published TenPayGo’s fees and limits separately. Weixin Pay’s card rule is no fee up to ¥200 and 3% above, and the national limit for visitors is US$5,000 per payment. Check the amount on the payment screen before you confirm.
