Getting around
Yinchuan is spread out: the old town (Xingqing district: Gulou, Yuhuang Pavilion, the two pagodas, Nanguan Mosque) is walkable, the Ningxia Museum and Huaiyuan night market are a taxi ride west, and the big sights (Western Xia Tombs, Zhenbeibao, Helan rock carvings, Baisikou, the wineries) lie 30–60 km west along the foot of the Helan Mountains. City tourist bus lines and seasonal scenic-area shuttles run out there, but schedules change by season, so the easiest way is DiDi for single legs or a car with driver for the day (ask your hotel). Sand Lake is about an hour north; Shapotou is a day trip or overnight by high-speed train to Zhongwei. Yinchuan (Ningxia) is outside the 240-hour visa-free transit stay area. Carry your passport: most tickets are real-name.
